The Things I Learned From You.

Breathe in.

Breathe out.

Look around you – see the pure blue-ness of the sky, the way that the clouds are 500 different shades of white.

Feel the breeze and the way the cool air embraces you in a hug that is somehow both warmer than the sun and as chilly as a January frost.

Feel the ground beneath you – stomp your feet, jump up and down.

Let your voice ring out – sing, speak, scream if you need too.

Your life is filled up to the brim and bubbling over with shoulds, coulds, woulds.

They told you all that you should be.

They put limits on what you believed you could be.

They dictated how you would live your life.

And you? You thought that you didn’t have a choice.

You bowed down to their every demand because they convinced you they knew best.

And you knew no different.

No one taught you to question authority.

No one taught you to speak even when – especially when – your voice shakes.

No one taught you to stand tall and confidently when your knees threaten to buckle out from under neath you.

No one taught you to raise your arms up in the air despite the shaking and quivering resonating from inside your bones.

You were taught to run scared.

To bow down.

To listen.

To make no trouble and cause no alarm.

To be everything.

But to never be too much.

So, here you sit.

Trapped.

Isolated.

Cold – even in the warmest summer sun.

Your mind is confused, but trust me – your heart knows the way.

And here’s the thing…

Your heart has always known exactly what to do.

So trust it.

Rely on it.

Build your own life.

There are no rules.

There is no “best way.”

There is no right.

There is no wrong.

You will be just fine.

No matter what you choose to do.

No matter where you choose to be.

No matter how you choose to live.

You will be just fine so long as you do one thing…

Make a choice.

Make any choice.

But don’t let them choose for you.

They stole so many years from you,

so much joy,

so much life.

It’s your turn now.

YOU have the power to choose.

My darling, it is not your job to change the world.

Your life’s purpose is not to please everyone around you.

Make waves.

Dance to your own beat.

Life your own unique, beautiful life.

Take back your own power – you’ve had it all along, you just didn’t know where to find it.

It will be unlike anything you could have ever dreamed or imagined for yourself.

It will exceed any limits anyone else could ever put on you.

It will be painfully difficult, and breathtakingly beautiful.

It will be everything.

But mostly, it will be yours.

These are the things I’ve learned from you.

This is a piece I wrote based on what I’ve learned from my younger self – the things I’ve learned from my own pain and life experiences.

“I fell in love with her courage, her sincerity, and her flaming self respect. And it’s these things I’d believe in, even if the whole world indulged in wild suspicions that she wasn’t all she should be. I love her and it is the beginning of everything.”
F. Scott Fitzgerald
